FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Metro-North is hoping that it will be able to restore full service to the New Haven line by Friday following the fire in New York City Tuesday night that affected service across all lines.

Trains were operating on an enhanced Saturday schedule on Thursday, running with about 75 percent capacity. MTA spokesperson Aaron Donovan said that crews of between 50 and 100 people have been on site at the Park Avenue location where the fire took place, repairing vertical columns and cross beams.

Trains were running at about 60 percent capacity Wednesday before the crews were able to make repairs and bring a third track into service, Donovan said. Repairs to the fourth track have been concluded and Metro-North is conducting tests on the area Thursday. The railroad will likely have a better idea later Thursday on whether it will be able to run full train service on Friday morning.

“We’re hopeful that service will be restored, it depends on how quickly we receive results from the testing,” Donovan said.

The reduced service caused severe delays and overcrowding on trains Wednesday. Donovan said that reports from the field indicated that Thursday saw reduced crowding, and that delays were short and fewer in number compared to Wednesday.
