Connecticut's gas prices are among the highest in the nation, with motorists paying an average of $4.01 per regular gallon, compared with the national average of $3.70, according to AAA. The only state in the continental United States paying more is California at $4.04. New York is No. 3 with gas averaging $3.90 per gallon.

The average price in Connecticut was $3.81 per gallon a week ago, $3.80 a month ago and $3.76 a year ago. For a more localized price, AAA reports the average price in Bridgeport is $4.06 per gallon.

Since July 11, the average price of gas has risen 18 cents nationally and is up nine cents from a month ago. Prices are up 28 cents nationally from where they sat a year ago.

Driving the increase at the pump are tensions in the Middle East and the increasing demand of summer driving season, which have combined to push the price of a barrel of oil past the $100 mark for the first time since March 2012, according to AAA Southern New England.

According to GasBuddy.com, the price of gas in Fairfield ranges from $3.97 at the Cumberland Farms station at 975 Kings Highway E. to $4.15 at the Shell station at 3232 Post Road.

There may be no relief in sight for drivers, as there still are several months until refineries switch from the eco-friendly summer blend of fuel to the cheaper winter blend in fall.
