Fairfield GOP Picks Full Slate of Candidates

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Voters in town now know all their options for this November’s elections. The Fairfield Republican Town Committee filled its slate of candidates for the fall ballot. Chair James Baldwin said after the decisions were made that he’s proud his party will have candidates for every open spot.

“I think that’s a great indication of the commitment and the reinvigoration of the Republicans in town,” Baldwin said. “Hopefully we can swing the pendulum back from where it is now to where it belongs.”

On July 19, Fairfield’s Republicans went to the polls in the party’s caucus to choose candidates for First Selectman. Robert Bellitto Jr. won that contest, edging David Becker and Hugh Dolan to earn the party’s endorsement for Fairfield’s top elected position. Current Board of Selectmen member James Walsh will join him on the ticket, vying against Democrats Michael Tetreau and Cristin McCarthy Vahey for spots on the three-member board.

The Republican slate was not full after the July 19 vote, so the Republican Town Committee met Tuesday to fill in the open spots. Its candidates for the rest of the town’s elected offices are (“I” indicates an incumbent):

Town Clerk Betsy P. Browne (I) will run to keep her post. The Democrats did not name a candidate to run against her, so she will most likely hold onto her job for another four years. She is responsible for maintaining all of Fairfield’s records and issuing permits and licenses.
