Westport resident Christopher Somsky was serving a nine-year sentence for a robbery conviction at the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution when he walked away from an approved day program at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield on Saturday, March 9.

Somsky, 45, was taken into custody at an area hospital at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, after he sought treatment for a hip injury.

Somsky was deemed a “low-risk offender” by the Department of Corrections immediately following the announcement of his escape.

According to the Department of Corrections, Somsky was being treated for the injury at a local hospital. Waterbury Police later confirmed that officers responded to Waterbury Hospital to supervise Somsky until a parole officer arrived. Officials said that they believe the injury was sustained while on the run. He was taken into custody at the hospital.

After being cleared for discharge, Somsky is scheduled to be transferred to the Northern Correctional Institution, where his placement will be reviewed and he will face administrative segregation.

Reports stated that Somsky was a participant in the Second Chance Pell Program, a pilot program announced in 2016 by the Department of Education to provide additional access to educational programs to incarcerated individuals.
