FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Museum and History Center is hosting “Pie Night,” a Thanksgiving tradition dating back to the 1800s, on Friday, Nov. 18, from 6-8 p.m. at the historic Ogden House, 1520 Bronson Road.

Two hundred years ago, Fairfield had its own special way of celebrating Thanksgiving.

One evening around the holiday was designated as Pie Night, a social event when people walked from house to house on the Old Post Road and Mill Plain Green.

The festivities started after dinner, and the order of the march varied from year to year.

As the revelers moved on, the crowd grew larger as the hosts and hostesses at each house joined the roving party.

Throughout the evening, the participants sampled anywhere from 15 to 20 different varieties of pies.

The background of the custom is obscure, but the Burr family is generally credited with starting the tradition around 1800.

There was no prize for the one who consumed the most pie.

This year, Fairfielders and friends can celebrate the family tradition at the Ogden House, a saltbox home from 1750.

The event will combine the pie tastings with candlelight tours of the house.

“We are excited to revive the tradition of Pie Night in a beautiful historic home,” said Christine Jewell, director of education and programs at the museum. “We hope many locals will join us for a delightful and delicious evening!”

Suggested donations of $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students will be collected at the door.
