Police say three men tried to steal an ATM from the Southport Diner during a late-night burglary on February 2 but didn't get away with a dime. Instead, they left a trail of damage and evidence tying them to other crimes in neighboring towns, Fairfield police said.

Fairfield detectives worked with regional law enforcement partners to identify the suspects and link them not only to the botched ATM theft but also to multiple burglary cases across Connecticut, officials said.

Edgar Crespo, 34, of Stratford; Donnie James, 22, of Bridgeport; and Francisco Ayala, 24, of Bridgeport, were arrested this week, police said.

Crespo and James face charges including third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, attempted third-degree larceny, and first-degree criminal mischief. They were each held on a $50,000 bond, police said.

Ayala faces third-degree larceny and attempted third-degree larceny charges. He was also held on a $50,000 bond, according to police.
