A Fairfield County nurse is facing charges for allegedly stealing pain medication from patients for several months, police said.

The director of the Maplewood at Darien notified investigators at the Darien Police Department that an employed nurse had been stealing prescription controlled substances from residents.

Police said that the nurse in question, identified as Bridgeport resident Stacey Thompson, 34, stole 50mg Tramadol - an opioid pain medication that requires a prescription - pills from four residents living in the facility.

According to the director of the facility, they became aware of the thefts when they were notified that some of the residents’ blister-packs of medication had been tampered with, and the Tramadol removed.

“One of the residents in questions refills their own prescription, and the facility had discovered unauthorized refill requests on her behalf,” police noted. When confronted by Maplewood administration, Thompson admitted to the theft of medication and has since provided Maplewood with a written statement.

On June 3, investigators spoke with Thompson, who admitted that she began stealing medication in January or February this year to deal with bodily pain she was experienced. She also stated that she ordered 30 pills for one patient and took 15 of them.

An arrest warrant for Thompson was issued and she turned herself into police on Friday, June 14. Thompson as taken into custody and charged with obtaining drugs and sixth-degree larceny. She is currently released on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, June 25 to respond to the charges.
