DARIEN, Conn. — A driver who could not remember how her car became so heavily damaged that it was inoperable was arrested on drunken driving charges in Darien, police said.

Officers were sent to Hoyt Street and Phillips Lane at 12:53 p.m. Sept. 26 on a report of an erratic driver, police said.

They found a white Honda Civic pulled to the side of the road on Hoyt Street, police said.

When the officer approached the car, it was immediately apparent that it had sustained heavy damage to the front passenger-side tire and rim, rendering the vehicle inoperable, police said.

The driver, Eleanor Behringer, 59, of Norwalk, was still behind the wheel, police said. When asked about the damage, she was unable to remember hitting anything or how the vehicle had become inoperable, police said.

Behringer appeared confused and had difficulty putting the vehicle in par, and removing the keys, police said.

A witness said the car had been swerving heavily and had struck the curb several times, police said.

Behringer was asked to submit to field sobriety testing, which she failed to perform to standard, police said. Officers noted that she was unsteady on her feet, police said.

She was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Behringer was released on $500 bond for a court date of Oct. 6.
