The Greenwich Police Department's Animal Control Section said the distressed animals were dispatched for humanitarian reasons.

The animals were tested for the rabies virus, and the results should be in by Wednesday, Feb. 12.

"There was no immediate indication the animals suffered from the rabies virus," police said.

Due to the discovery of the animals in a small area and as a precaution, the Greenwich Police Animal Control Section, in conjunction with the Greenwich Health Department, will also be testing the deceased animals for distemper and parvovirus.

Both of these are not a concern for humans, but they are contagious for dogs. Those results may take several days.

"We are reminding all dog owners that when walking your dog at Greenwich Point, make sure that your dog is leashed and under your control," the department said."Do not let your dog go near any dead or live wild animals."

The department is also warning visitors to the park that sees a dead, sick, or distressed raccoon, not to touch or approach the animal and please contact the department's Communications Center at 203-622-8004.

"We are asking all dog owners to make sure that their dog is up to date on their rabies, distemper and parvovirus vaccinations," officials said.
