High School Senior Was Victim Of Fatal Single-Car Crash On Holyoke-Southampton Line

A high school student who died in a car crash in late-February is being remembered by the community as a passionate student with a strong work ethic and a great friend.

Markiyan “Mark” Yuzych, 18, of West Springfield, died on Feb. 28 when, around 10:30 p.m., the vehicle he was driving crashed into a utility pole on County Road near the Holyoke-Southampton border. When emergency responders arrived on the scene, the car was fully engulfed in flames, WWLP reported.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Yuzych was born in Ukraine in 2002 and was a senior at Dean Vocational High School in Holyoke. He was described as a “passionate student” with a great interest in mechanics.

When not in school, Yuzych had part-time jobs, worked on cars, rode his motorcycle, hung out with his dog “Bones,” and spent time with his beloved friends and family, said Yuzych's obituary on MassLive.

Yuzych had a part-time job at Domino’s in Holyoke and had previously worked at Six Flags New England in Agawam.

A member of the LifePoint Church in Chicopee, Yuzych is survived by his parents Oleg and Nataliya (Manzyuk) Yuzych and sister Yana Yuzych, as well as his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and best friend Owen Nieves of Holyoke.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to St. Pierre - Phaneuf Fairview Chapels in Chicopee.
