Voters in the 27th State Senate District in Stamford and Darien go to the polls again next month to fill the seat vacated by Andrew McDonald. Re-elected to a fifth term in November, McDonald resigned last week to serve in Gov. Dannel Malloys administration.
The election will be held Feb. 22, a release from Secretary of the State Denise Merrills office said. McDonalds is one of nine General Assembly seats that will be filled via in the special election. They include two other seats in the Senate and six in the House. All of the office holders resigned to serve in the Malloy administration, creating what Merrill described as a sea change in state government.
McDonald has been appointed general counsel to Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford.
By law, major parties have until Jan. 18 to endorse candidates for the election, Merrill said. Petitioning candidates must collect signatures amounting to 1 percent or more of the total number who voted for the seat in the November 2010 election. The signatures must be from voters who are registered in the district.
Residents who would like to vote in the special election but who are not registered have until Feb. 21 to do so.
I urge eligible voters in these [special election] districts to register as soon as possible so you can cast a ballot and choose someone to represent you in Hartford, Merrill said.
Other special elections will be held in Senate Districts 6 and 13 and House Districts 20, 25, 36, 99, 101 and 136.
