Monroe Animal Control said the incident happened on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the area of Church Street, while the owner was cleaning off a gas grill and heard the dog yelp in the tree line of the yard.

The dog's owner took the animal to a veterinary office who then called animal control to report a "wound of unknown origin," said Spc. Ofc. Edward Risko.

The dog, who was vaccinated for rabies, suffered injuries to his hind leg consistent with bite wounds from a raccoon, fox or maybe coyote, said Risko.

A rabies advisory notice was issued and a 45-day close observation of the dog was advised.

The owner was issued a written warning for failure to license.
