DARIEN, Conn. -- For Joan, the mother of a recovering substance abuser, helping her son get back on the right path was impossible to do alone.

Thankfully, she found help in the form of California-based New Life House, a recovery community for young men. The results have been heartwarming: her son currently is sober and healthy once again.

"I’m blessed to have an amazing son," said Joan. "He hasn’t always been amazing though. Ian spent years using drugs to the extent that everything in his life was compromised. The wreckage included family unity, personal relationships, academic and job performance, his health and self-esteem."

Joan and her husband, Jon saw early signs of Ian dealing with addiction as he regularly smoked marijuana around the house. Thinking the phase would pass and not lead to anything more serious, they saw their son off to college. "A few months had passed and Ian looked like hell the first visit home," said Joan. "Already slender, he had lost weight and become gaunt. His beautiful blue eyes were muddled and underlined with permanent dark circles."

Again, thinking Ian's behavior would correct itself, Joan and Jon were shocked to see their son after the school year ended. "Unbeknownst to us, Ian became addicted to several other drugs after the first year of school," said Joan. "We worried a lot and were eager to have him home for the summer." However, things just kept getting worse.

"By the end of the year, Ian was arrested and charged with felony drug possession," she said. "The arrest brought us to our knees and our senses. Ian finally recognized that treatment was the only viable option."

Looking at treatment options, Ian's family chose New Life House because their daughter, Haley was already in Southern California attending college. Ian flew to Los Angeles to join New Life House in January of 2016 on his 21st birthday. "Our New Life House expectation was that Ian would have more sober time under his belt before returning to the real world, which would decrease his chances of relapse," said Joan.

Luckily, New Life House not only halted Ian's drug use but changed him for the better. "Ian’s time at New Life House has been mind-blowingly magical," said Joan. "His stay there has been life school at its best," she said. "He’s learned about himself and how to live a sober life. He’s growing into the capable man he was meant to be."
