A woman and her granddaughter were struck by a motorist who said he was blinded by the sunlight at the time of the incident.

It happened on Friday, Oct. 4 at about 4:50 p.m. in Bridgeport.

A 55-year-old man was traveling westbound on Fairfield Avenue operating a 1997 Honda Civic in the left-hand lane near 1349 Fairfield Avenue when he struck a 76-year-old female pedestrian who was crossing the street with her 9-year-old granddaughter outside of a crosswalk, police said.

The operator stated that he was blinded by the sunlight as he was driving and did not observe the pedestrians until it was too late.

The Bridgeport Fire Department and AMR ambulance responded to the scene.

Both the woman and her granddaughter were transported to St Vincent's hospital for their injuries. The 9-year-old sustained minor non-life threatening injuries and the elderly woman sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Bridgeport Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Anyone with additional information, related to this crash, is asked to contact the Bridgeport Police Traffic Division at 203-576-7604 or the Bridgeport Police Patrol Division (Officer Farkas) 203-581-5151.
