Officer Injured While Shooting Lunging Dog At Wantagh Home

A Nassau County police officer was injured after shooting a dog that lunged at him while on a call at a home in Wantagh, said police.

Police responded to a residence on Cherrywood Drive Saturday, Aug. 24 at 9:27 p.m. for a radio assignment of a suspicious person, according to Nassau County Police.

The officer police identified by his last name, Daddino, arrived first on the scene and was speaking to the complainant who then reportedly lost control of her dog, said police.

The pitbull "then charged in an attacking manner toward the officer. In fear of his safety the officer in the process of retreating, fired three rounds from his service weapon, striking the dog, resulting in the dog to stop advancing," according to police.

The police officer was taken to Nassau County Medical Center and treated for lacerations, according to a spokesman. 

The pitbull was taken to a veterinarian for treatment. No information is available on the dog's condition.

An investigation is ongoing, said police.
