DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury Police Department said it has issued nearly 200 infractions citywide this week since joining the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s latest initiative to crack down on distracted drivers.

The initiative started on April 4, police said.

The fines that can result from driving offenses such as talking on a handheld phone, texting, checking email, watching a video or taking a picture can range from $150 for the first time up to $500 for subsequent violations.

Drivers can also face a possible suspension of their operator’s license, police said.

Officers report stopping numerous repeat offenders during the crackdown, part of the “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign.
