DANBURY, Conn. -- A city man has been charged in a knife-wielding incident Tuesday morning at a pawn shop in Danbury, according to police.

Officers responded about 9 a.m. Tuesday to Yankee Peddler & Pawn Shop, 139 Main St., for a complaint of a disturbance, police said.

When they arrived, officers saw the front window glass door of Yankee Peddler & Pawn get broken out from the inside, said police. Edward Perez-Guzman, 23, of Danbury then came out through the broken door, police said.

That's when officers saw a 12-inch knife in Perez-Guzman's right hand, said police.

Perez-Guzman walked over to an officer who was pulling up in his vehicle and raised the knife in a stabbing motion, police said.

Perez-Guzman was yelling obscenities and gibberish, police said.

Officers told Perez-Guzman to drop the knife, said police. Perez-Guzman then walked into the intersection of Main and Keeler streets and dropped to his knees with his back to officers, police said.

Perez-Guzman still had the knife in his hand at this time, police said.

Officers advanced toward him and restrained him in a prone position, and Perez-Guzman was taken into custody, said police.

The victim told police that Perez-Guzman had gone into the pawn shop and asked to see a knife. Upon being given the knife, Perez-Guzman became irrational and started swinging the knife in a slashing motion toward the victim and another employee, police said.

The victim then locked the door as he called 911 in an attempt to stop Perez-Guzman from attacking anyone outside the store, police said.

Perez-Guzman then went after the victim with the knife, police said. The victim sustained a cut in the struggle, police said.

Upon hearing the police sirens, Perez-Guzman grabbed a leaf blower and smashed the front window door, said police.

He was arrested and held on $50,000 bond, said police.

Perez-Guzman was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny, second-degree robbery, interfering with a police officer, disorderly conduct, third-degree assault and two counts of second-degree threatening.
