According to state police, the enhanced enforcement will run through Wednesday, July 1 through the evening of Sunday, July 5.

Already, troopers report they have seen an increase in the number of vehicles on the highways.

That will likely continue as many residents have Friday, July 3 off from work and beaches, barbecues and other activities beckon.

During the special enforcement, troopers from each of the agency’s 11 troops will be conducting roving DUI patrols, as well as looking for aggressive and speeding drivers.

Some safety tips they are offering include buckling up, obeying speed limits, staying off the cellphone, and never drinking and driving.

“We know that many residents are anxious to get outside and enjoy the summer weather as the state continues to re-open," said State Police Colonel Stavros Mellekas. “Everyone – including troopers – wants to make it safely to their destinations. So we ask all motor vehicle operators to follow state law to keep yourselves, your passengers, and all first responders safe while on the roads.”

Stats from the 2019 July 4th holiday include:

  • Calls for Service: 7,184
  • Speeding tickets issued: 652
  • Seatbelt violation issued: 75
  • Total violations: 1,859
  • DUI arrests: 50
  • Accidents: Investigated: 248
  • With injury: 51
  • Fatal: 0 accidents resulting in a fatality

During the weekend, residents can report a suspected drunk driver by calling 911, as state police consider it a true emergency.
