A woman from the region was charged with larceny after allegedly stealing a $28,000 check out of a Fairfield County mailbox and altering the name and cashing it.

Police were altered to the theft when a resident came to the Westport Police Department in January to report a larceny.

The victim said he placed a check for over $28,000 in the post office mailbox located on Sylvan Road South at Post Road West, said Lt. David Wolf.

The check was stolen from the mailbox and the payee was altered to the name Thalia Patrick, Wolf said.

The victim confirmed that he never wrote a check to anyone by that name and is not familiar with her, police said.

The detective assigned to the case completed a search warrant to determine the name of the account holder in which the fraudulent check was deposited, Wolf said.

The account allegedly belonged to Thalia Patrick, age 29, of the Bronx. Additional evidence linking her to this crime was obtained. Based on the investigation, a warrant for Patrick’s arrest was completed, Wolf said.

On the morning of Thursday, June 2, Patrick turned herself in at the Westport Police Department.

She was charged with larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny.

Patrick was released on a $75,000.00 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at Stamford Superior Court on Thursday, June 9.
