DANBURY, Conn. -- Youth Volunteer Corps of Western Connecticut in Danbury was named a 2016 Gold Level YVC Affiliate, one of less than 15 YVC programs throughout the U.S. and Canada awarded this honor.

The youth service program, hosted by United Way of Western Connecticut, offers volunteer opportunities for more than 150 youth who serve nearly 4,000 volunteer hours every year.

“YVC of Western Connecticut is paving the way for YVC programs all over the U.S. and Canada,” said David Battey, founder and president of YVC’s headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. “The program has had such a profound impact on both youth volunteers and the communities they’re serving.”

YVC Headquarters works with each YVC affiliate to ensure that they are serving the youth and their community in the best way possible. The Gold Level rating goes only to the very top YVC programs that serve as stand-out examples for how the program can serve its community.

“We are so proud of this recognition for our YVC program and the youth volunteers involved,” said Casey Levene, program director of YVC of Western Connecticut. “We look forward to seeing all the great things that youth in our area will accomplish in the coming year through their involvement in our YVC program.”

YVC of Western Connecticut engages youth ages 11 - 18 in quality, team-based service-learning projects. Its mission is to create and increase volunteer opportunities to enrich youth, address community needs and develop a lifetime ethic of service.

Last year, 158 youth served a total of 3,641 volunteer hours with YVC of Western Connecticut, helping out at places like retirement homes, soup kitchens, animal shelters, parks and more.
