Five Fairfield County Towns Rank Among Top 100 Safest In Nation

Five towns throughout Fairfield County have been ranked among Safewise’s “100 Safest Places  in the U.S.” list for 2019.

The list was compiled using statistics like population, median income, and property and violent crime rates per 1,000 residents. Connecticut cities comprise 14 of the top 100, making it the second-safest state - in first place is New Jersey, whose city rankings comprise 30% of the list.

Here are the Fairfield County towns that made the list as well as their estimated population and crime rates:

No. 14: New Canaan (Newly ranked)

  • Property crime rate (per 1,000): 6.286

No. 25: Darien (Up from No. 29 in 2018)

  • Population: 21,910
  • Median income: $121,910
  • Violent crime rate (per 1,000): 0.137
  • Property crime rate (per 1,000): 12.460

No. 36: Westport (Newly ranked)

  • Population: 28,079
  • Median income: $181,360
  • Violent crime rate (per 1,000): 0.178
  • Property crime rate (per 1,000): 10.613

No. 48: Wilton (Newly ranked)

  • Population: 18,643
  • Median income: $180,313
  • Violent crime rate (per 1,000): 0.215
  • Property crime rate (per 1,000): 7.670
