DANBURY, Conn. — A new outdoor sculpture exhibit, which will be officially unveiled on Friday afternoon, is bringing the art scene to the streets of downtown Danbury.
Organizers from CityCenter Danbury hope the new Urban Sculpture Park set up along Main Street near Kennedy Park draws visitors to check out the growing art scene in the city.
Eight artists have installed eight sculptures on the sidewalks and green areas from 270 Main St. up to 288 Main St., near Kennedy Park. The sculptures will remain on display outside for one year.
“The addition of sculpture to downtown Danbury is refreshing, exciting, and a wonderful addition to a resurgence downtown,” said Lisa Scails, executive director of the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut.
David Boyajian, a New Fairfield sculptor and curator of the Urban Sculpture Park, coordinated the artists and their work. (Click here to read more about Boyajian and his sculpture of "The Hat-Maker" at City Hall.)
In addition to Boyajian, the other sculptors are Kate Winn, Murray Bodin, Steve Brooks, Richard Pitts, B.A. D’Alessandro, Glenn Zweygardt and John Ferguson.
CityCenter Danbury is working with the town of Bethel and Bethel Arts to promote public art in the centers of both municipalities. “With downtown Danbury and downtown Bethel being so close, we hope visitors will explore both of the exhibits,” said P.J. Prunty, CityCenter executive director.
A ribbon-cutting with Mayor Mark Boughton will officially open the exhibit on Friday, June 2, at 4:30 p.m. .
