"Rabbi Tiwy has brought many new ideas to our community and as a result invigorated the community with a renewed sense of value. His passion is infectious across our entire congregation. We are extremely fortunate that he has chosen to make Danbury his home," said Miles Barel, UJC President.
He said the congregation is looking forward to the official installation of Tiwy as its new leader. Tiwy joined the UJC last July following his ordination in May.
Before studying at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, Tiwy earned master's degrees in both English and Spanish and completed a one-year scholarship at Clark University in Massachusetts.
He had gone to Clark from Germany, where he grew up in the Catholic faith. He speaks fluent English, German, Spanish, Hebrew and Dutch.
As part of the festivities, the UJC will also welcome Rabbi Martin Cohen as an honored guest. Cohen is a professor at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion and is Tiwy’s mentor. Cohen is a renowned historian and author.
Celebratory desserts and refreshments – known in Hebrew as an oneg Shabbat - will follow the service.
The event is free and open to the public.
