DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury Flyers Cross Country running team, a program sponsored by the Danbury Youth Track and Field Association, started a new season with its first practice on Wednesday.
The team is open to boys and girls of all skill levels from grades 4-8 in the Greater Danbury area. The goal of Danbury Flyers XC is to provide an opportunity for area youth to develop the skills, fitness level, and most of all desire to participate in long distance running for fun and/or competition. The Flyers are committed to provide a safe, fun atmosphere in which to promote this goal and to help our young athletes perform up to their potential.
The team is a member of the Western Connecticut Conference, and is a member club of the USATF and AAU national organizations. This year, the Flyers will compete in the WCC Championships, the Connecticut Middle School State Championships, and several invitational meets including the Nike Future Stars race in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
The team will conclude its season in late November by competing in the USATF Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships. Last year, the team's 15-16 year old boys (who joined the team at the conclusion of the Danbury High School season) placed fifth in the United States at the USATF Junior Olympic national championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C..
