‘Anne Of Green Gables’ Opens At WCSU In Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. – Canada’s longest running musical, “Anne of Green Gables,” comes to the Western Connecticut State University stage in Danbury starting this week and running through Sunday, May 8.

Presented by Western’s Department of Theatre Arts, performances will be Friday, April 29, Saturday, April 30 and Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, April 30, Sunday, May 1, Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 at 2 p.m., in the Mainstage Theatre of the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) on the university’s Westside campus.

The 1965 romantic comedy musical was written by Donald Herron and Norman Campbell, based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel. The show originated at the Charlottetown Festival in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and is the story of a spunky and imaginative red-haired orphan.

The mostly female cast includes: Jillian Caillouette, of Meriden, as Anne Shirley; Rebecca Hayes, of Granby, as Marrila Cuthbert; Daniel Dressel, of Middlebury, as Matthew Cuthbert; Jared Starkey, of Columbia, as Gilbert Blythe; Emily Gray, of Southington, as Rachel Lynde; and Jessica Schwartz, of Brookfield, as Diana Barry, among others. The production is directed by John Hickok.

“Anne of Green Gables is packed with important lessons and discoveries that I believe every person can relate to,” Caillouette said. “Anne is a character that I am honored and grateful to play. She is an inspiration to me and to others. I hope that Anne's fierce independence and passion empower those who come to see the show,” she added.
