DANBURY, Conn. -- The Danbury woman who baked up the idea of Bash! was first inspired by her young son to venture into the creation of organic cakes.

When her son, E'Jaaz, now 16, was turning a year old, Melaka Williams said she wanted to make him a healthy birthday cake.

“I wanted to live a little more. Something healthy. Organic,” said Williams. It took another year for her to cook up the idea of using organic and fresh ingredients to bake him a special Africa-themed birthday cake for his second birthday.

She then spent a few years making and giving away organic cakes before officially starting her business eight years ago.

In such a competitive economy, she said a business needs to come up with something crazy and over the top to succeed. And just one taste of her organic treats proves she has done that.

“Cake is meant to be eaten, not stored on shelves,” Williams said on how a fresh cake should be enjoyed.

Her cake line offers many flavors, including strawberry shortcake, harvest (which is a play on spices, similar to carrot cake during winter/fall times), red velvet (no food coloring is used), chocolate velvet, vanilla cava, lemonade and brown butter caramel, her newest flavor.

In addition to baking, Williams and her husband, a computer engineer, own income property in Brooklyn, aside from the location of her cake business.

All three of their children are venturing into the entrepreneurial world as well. E'Jaaz, 16, has an organic landscaping business, while 10-year-old Ziya has a flower line that she runs with the help of her sister, Kiana, 11.

With the cake business, Williams bakes for all occasions: weddings, birthdays, special events and just because. If you want something specific, she will be try to make it special for you.
