Danbury Foot And Ankle Surgeon Begins Using 3D Printing Technology

DANBURY, Conn. -- Dr. F. Scott Gray, a foot and ankle surgeon with CT Family Orthopedics and co-director of the Danbury Foot and Ankle Center, has begun using 3D printing technology application in the management of complex traumatic, post traumatic and disease-causing foot and ankle deformities.

3D printing technology is being used and refined in many medical/surgical applications such as pediatric cardiac surgery by allowing surgeons to better understand complex birth cardiac and great vessel deformity.

However, in orthopedic surgery it is just beginning to be used in preoperative planning for complex surgical reconstruction procedures.

Gray is using the application to visualize the geometry of deformities and understand how to approach reconstruction of these difficult problems with even greater detailed preoperative visualization than other current radiographic techniques allow or in addition to them.

It has allowed him to not only understand the complexity of deformities, but by having models to actually practice deformity surgical correction on called "bench surgery," he is hoping to be able to reconstruct deformities that otherwise might not be safe to reconstruct and improve outcomes of cases and further minimize complications.
