A two-vehicle crash left a former Connecticut State Senator in critical condition at a busy Fairfield County intersection.

The crash took place around 6:53 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13, at the intersection of Boston Avenue and Noble Avenue in Bridgeport, said Bridgeport Police Captain Kevin Gilleran.

According to Gilleran, the crash took place when a red 2002 Acura RSX was traveling westbound on Boston Avenue approaching its intersection with Noble Avenue as a gray 2010 Ford Fusion was traveling eastbound on Boston Avenue.

Former State Senator Edwin Gomes, 84, of Bridgeport, was driving the Ford Fusion as it attempted to turn left into the Kentucky Fried Chicken parking lot, at 325 Boston Avenue, it collided with the Acura RSX, driven by Clive Henry, 19, of Bridgeport, traveling in the far right westbound lane of Boston Avenue, Gilleran said.

The impact of the cars colliding with one another caused significant damage to the vehicles and injuries to both operators. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Bridgeport Firefighters and AMR Ambulance personnel were able to rescue the operators from their vehicles and quickly transport them to area hospitals.

Gomes is in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.

Henry is listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries at Saint Vincent’s Hospital.

Gomes served as the former Deputy Majority Leader, Connecticut State Senate from 2005 to 2012, and Assistant Majority Leader from 2015 to 2019. He also served as a Bridgeport City Councilman from 1983-1989, and again from 1999 to 2005.
