Curran said that there are now 12,024 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county, a rise of 1,437 from the day before, the largest single-day jump since the outbreak began. There have now been 22,178 reported cases on Long Island.

Of the 43 new reported COVID-19 deaths, 29 were men and 14 were women. They range in age between 33 and 93, Curran said.

“These numbers are sobering,” the county executive said. “But we’ve been saying this since the beginning. We’ve been expecting this. We’re on the upswing of the curve, we haven’t reached the apex yet.”

During his daily press briefing on Friday, April 3, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the numbers in Nassau and Suffolk County are “concerning.”

“We’ve been monitoring hotspots on a nightly basis so we can track the virus and see what’s happening. There are certain communities that have been hit harder, and you look at New York City, but we’re also seeing an increase on Long Island, which is something we’re concerned about,” Cuomo said.

“Long Island does not have as elaborate a healthcare system as New York City. It doesn’t have the same amount of resources on Long Island, and we’re seeing an increase in the number of cases there, and it has us very concerned.”
