Applegate Farm, 616 Grove St., Montclair. Check any poll online and you’ll find Applegate Farm at the top of any best ice cream list—including Daily Voice’s, where it ran away with votes to place #1 in our recent Best Ice Cream in Essex County poll. Many flavors are gluten-free and you can enjoy splits, shakes, cakes and pies.

Mark & Julie’s Homemade Ice Cream, 476 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange. Over 52 flavors of homemade ice cream (with non-dairy sorbets, Toffutti and ices as well) and 25 years in business make Mark & Julie’s a favorite. Known for tasty and generous portions, no wonder they’ve won several awards.

The Towne Scoop, 542B Bloomfield Ave., Verona. Hard-dipped, soft-serve, ices and toppings galore. The Towne Scoop lives up to its reputation as an old-fashioned, hometown ice cream parlor. If you can’t decide on a flavor, try Red Devil—it comes highly recommended on Yelp.

Nasto’s, 236 Jefferson St., Newark. Family-owned and operated since 1939, Nasto’s is a Newark staple serving ice cream and traditional Italian desserts. Facebook reviews call it the best ice cream, hands down. Don’t leave without trying the tartufo.

Holsten’s, 1063 Broad Street, Bloomfield. Love or hate that last episode of The Soprano’s, you might remember Holsten’s in the finale. With a candy counter and a diner-style menu, ice cream will just be saving the best for last in this old-school establishment. Beloved by many as indicated by countless online reviews, the homemade ice cream in its chill atmosphere keeps customers coming back.
