There are the classics: turkey and Swiss, tuna salad, pastrami on rye and chicken parm. Then there are the specialties: grilled veggies, smoked turkey and brie, the fat sandwich.

New Jersey has them all. Here are five places in Union County where you can find your favorite or try something new.

Cioffi’s, 762 Mountain Ave., Sprinfield. Founder Antonio Cioffi arrived in America with $20 in his pocket in 1957 and fulfilled his American Dream. Yes, they do pizza, but you’d be giving Cioffi’s short shrift if you didn’t try a sub or specialty sandwich like the Pappa Cioffi’s Sandwich. Vegetarian? No problem! There’s more than one option—try the Grilled Portabello Sub.

Goodman’s Deli & Restaurant, 400 Springfield Ave., Berkeley Heights. Classic Jewish-style deli food since 1943. From borscht to potato pancakes to chopped liver, it’ll feel like Bubbe’s love. The signature sandwich, a pastrami, does not disappoint according to the countless Yelp reviews. The pickles earn high praise, too!

Sub Stop Delicatessen, 913 N Wood Ave., Roselle. Affordable and tasty, Sub Stop rates five stars on Yelp. Fresh bread, stuffed sandwiches and Facebook raves from customers who have kept coming back for 30 years. Enough said.

Constantino’s Italian Market, 336 Chestnut St., Union. Homemade goodness in a traditional Italian deli and market. The Sicilian Turkey Club and Romano sandwich come recommended. Note that it can get busy at lunchtime so consider calling your order in ahead.

Cranford’s Best Bagel & Deli, 107 South Ave., Cranford. With over 15 bagel varieties, you can’t go wrong choosing one for your sandwich. TripAdvisor reviews praise the quick service. You’ll find all the usual sandwich suspects as well as a diverse selection of specialty sammiches and paninis.
