Lines of scattered, severe thunderstorms are sweeping through the area from west to east.

Some of the storms, first spotted late in the afternoon on Sunday, Aug. 18, are packing winds up to 60 miles per hour. 

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for Manhattan as well as extreme Southern Westchester, southern Putnam County and western Dutchess County. A Flash Flood Watch was also issued for Manhattan, where rain was falling at rates of 1-2 inches per hour just before 6 p.m.

More warnings are expected for elsewhere in the area as cell activity increases. (See satellite image above.)

Scattered storms will continue until about midnight.

The high temperature on Monday, Aug. 19 could hit or surpass the 90-degree mark on a mostly sunny day. Heat-index values (the combination of the humidity and the high temperature) will be between 95 and 100 degrees. A Heat Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Monday.

Expect pop-up showers and isolated storms from around 2 p.m. through around 11 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 20 will be partly sunny with a high temperature near 90 degrees and a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 a.m.
