Benjamin Mitchell, 24, of Ansonia, faces multiple charges following his arrest just after 2 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, Connecticut State Police said.
The car was traveling south in the northbound lanes near Exit 27A. The trooper saw the vehicle suddenly swerve left, cut across all three lanes of traffic, and take the exit ramp to Route 8 north — barely avoiding several other cars, State Police said.
The trooper quickly pulled him over.
The trooper reported that Mitchell had “watery and bloodshot” eyes, slurred speech, and trouble answering basic questions. Mitchell told the officer that he had “missed his exit and did a U-turn on the highway” to get back to it.
He was handcuffed after police said he failed a field sobriety test.
Mitchell now faces several charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, driving the wrong way on a limited-access highway, and reckless endangerment, authorities said.
He was released on a $1,000 bond, police said.
