The crash took place eastbound around 12:35 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, near Exit 52 in Commack, said a spokeswoman for the Suffolk County Police.

According to police, a Highway Patrol officer was in his vehicle, conducting a traffic stop on the right shoulder, when his vehicle was struck from the rear by another vehicle, the spokeswoman said.

The police vehicle, a marked highway patrol unit, then struck the vehicle that was pulled over for the traffic stop, she said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the police car was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer and at least one occupant of the vehicle involved in the traffic stop were also transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

An investigation is underway.
