Westport Schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer has proposed a $119,283,880 budget for 2019-20, which represents an increase of 2.68 percent ($3,110,080) from the current budget. The proposal would potentially see as many as 18 jobs in the district eliminated to cut costs.

The proposal includes cutting as many as six full-time teachers, several support teachers, special education specialists, an administrator, library and media teacher. Many of the cuts are centered on Coleytown Middle School, which may not reopen before 2020 due to mold concerns in the building.

According to the district, the budget is designed to “support the work to remain a district of educational excellence; preserve the current academic programs; continue to support the Strategic Plan goals; meet state and federal mandates; support the safety and security of students; adjust for student enrollment shifts; implement the K-6 model and focus on the efficiency of resources.”
