Ojakian will propose a 5 percent increase to $10,089 for in-state tuition at regional universities and 3.5 percent increase to $4,173 for community colleges, Connecticut Post reported.

Affected schools include Western, Southern, Eastern and Central Connecticut State universities as well as Norwalk, Housatonic and Naugatuck Valley Community Colleges, among others. The increase would not affect the University of Connecticut, where a tuition hike of 6.7 percent hike — for a otal of nearly $11,200 — has already been approved.

Ojakian cited a state budget deficit of nearly $1 billion as a reason for the proposed increases, Connecticut Post said.

The Board of Regents is expected to meet and vote on the plan on March 29, according to Connecticut Post.
