Bridgeport Could Lose Two Schools, Dozens of Faculty

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Bridgeport may lose two schools and dozens of teachers, counselors and aides and get a shorter academic year if the district receives no new funding next year, according to Connecticut Post.

Interim Schools Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz proposed 18 cuts on Monday to keep the 2016-17 budget at $245.6 million, reported Connecticut Post.

Rabinowitz warned that the cuts would be disastrous for kids enrolled in Bridgeport schools and that the district needs an additional $15.1 million to break even, Connecticut Post said.

Around a quarter of the district's operating budget is funded by the city, with the rest coming from the state, Connecticut Post reported.

Rabinowitz's plan would result in the closure of Hall and Edison Elementary Schools, which have a combined enrollment of fewer than 540 students, said Connecticut Post.

The proposal would also end of the district's Talented and Gifted Program, the high school electives Rabinowitz restored in 2014, 98 classroom and special-education aides, 28 home-school coordinators and two school days, reported Connecticut Post.

Busing would only be provided to students in kindergarten through eighth-grade who live at least a mile and half away from school, Connecticut Post said.
