More than 87,000 new voters have registered in advance of the Connecticut primary, a record-setting pace, according to Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill. Primary voting will take place Tuesday, April 26.
"This primary has been a nail-biter and voters are eager to take part," Merrill said in a statement. "Whether you're a Republican or Democrat, this feels like the playoffs, only all of us get to participate. If you are a new or unaffiliated voter, there is time to register with a party to have your voice heard. Don't get left out!"
New and unaffiliated voters have until noon Monday, April 25, to register with a party in person at their town hall. Voters must be affiliated with a political party to take part in the Connecticut primary.
The deadline has passed for voters to change from one party to another, but new voters can still register and unaffiliated voters can choose a party.
Online registration is available through Friday, April 21. There is no Election Day registration during a primary.
So far, 87,085 new voters have registered to vote with the Connecticut secretary of the state in 2016. That includes 32,885 so far in April.
New voters since Jan. 1:
- Democratic: 41,674

- Democratic: 16,522

A large lead among blacks and women has given Clinton a 51 percent vs. 42 percent lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the poll said.
