BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Heavy-hitter political candidates might stay away from Bridgeport after Mayor Joe Ganim says the city can't afford to cover the cost of police overtime to help protect candidates such as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, according to the Connecticut Post.
In fact, Ganim has billed Trump and Clinton each $37,000 for their April visits to the city. It's an unusual move, and the campaigns are unlikely to pay the bill, Ganim spokesman Av Harris told the Connecticut Post.
Clinton's campaign told the Post that it doesn't request additional security and referred questions to the U.S. Secret Service. To date the Police Department has spent $9.3 million on overtime, twice the $4.3 million originally budgeted, added the Connecticut Post.
