Dyshan Best was killed Monday, March 31, after an incident with Bridgeport police, authorities said.
According to the Inspector General’s report, the situation began just before 6 p.m. on East Main Street. Officers were called to the area for reports of a large fight during a gathering tied to a funeral. Police also had a tip that someone in a black Chevrolet Tahoe nearby might have a gun.
When officers found the SUV in a store parking lot, Bridgeport Officer Erin Perrotta approached the vehicle and opened the passenger door. He told the man inside — identified Best — that he would be patted down. Best then ran from the car holding a bottle of liquor, according to the report.
As Best ran, officers Perrotta and Yoon Heo gave chase. At a gas station near Beecher and Kossuth Streets, Officer Heo used a stun gun, but Best kept running down Kossuth Street and into a nearby driveway.
By then, Best had discarded the liquor bottle and pulled an object with his right hand that appeared to be a gun, the report continued. Officer Heo then fired his pistol twice, hitting Best.
A 9mm handgun was found next to where Best fell, the report said.
Officers tried to give medical aid until the Bridgeport Fire Department arrived. Best was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:41 p.m.
The Office of the Inspector General continues to investigate the incident and has released the videos from the officers’ body-worn cameras as well as nearby surveillance cameras.
