The Westport Police Department will be offering a Citizens’ Police Academy for Westport residents beginning March 7.

The nine-week course will help up to 24 participants gain a better understanding of the role of the police department in the community.

Participants will watch demonstrations by highly trained police officers and get hands-on experience with some of the equipment used every day.

In addition to the classes, participants will have the opportunity to experience a ride-along with a patrol division officer and will receive CPR/AED certification from Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Services.

Classes meet Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. for nine consecutive weeks.

The academy is open to Westport residents age 21 and older.

To learn more, contact Detective Commander Lieutenant Eric Woods at (203) 341-6026.

Applications are available at police headquarters and are due by Feb. 12.
