The head-on crash took place around 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, in North Stonington, shortly after state police received multiple 911 calls of a driver traveling southbound in northbound lanes from Exit 93, said the Connecticut State Police.
Minutes later, as troopers were en route to find the driver, they received calls of a crash between a 2002 Mercedes CLK, driven by 17-year-old Abigayl Lanphear, and 2017 Honda Accord, driven by Roger Noel.
Those killed, all from Rhode Island, included Roger Noel, 85, Dorothy Noel, 83, and the driver of the wrong-way vehicle Abigayl Lanphear.
Those with serious injuries include Yvonne Noel, 56 of Rhode Island, Cynthia Plaziak, 62, address unknown, and Jada Laboy, 17 of Rhode Island, state police said.
Following the crash, the roadway was closed for hours while state police traffic specialists conducted an investigation.
The accident remains under investigation and state police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the event to call Trooper Martin Sullivan at Troop E in Montville at 860-848-6500.
