Three car burglars called the police to report a motor vehicle accident early Wednesday but wound up arrested when police discovered in their car GPS units that had been just stolen, Westport Police said.

At around 1:15 a.m. police were called to two car accident on North Avenue between Easton Road and Coleytown Road.

When police arrived three people in one vehicle said that the driver of another vehicle struck the rear of their vehicle, lost control and flipped over. They said a black man was the driver and fled the scene on foot.

That's when the story takes a twist as police discovered the suspect vehicle that was laying on its roof had been stolen from a Hazelnut Road home in town. As they searched for the suspect, officers noticed several GPS units in the vehicle that had the three passengers.

They gave the officers consent to check the recent data for the GPS units. One of the unit’s "Home" address showed a Blue Ribbon Drive address in Westport. Blue Ribbon Drive is in the same neighborhood as Hazelnut Road. Officers confirmed that the GPS unit came from a vehicle on Blue Ribbon Drive. Officers also determined that several other vehicles were entered in the area.

Based on this they arrested the three people in the second vehicle.

Police don't believe there was a driver of the stolen vehicle and instead are investigating the three people they arrested on the burglary charges are connected to the stolen vehicle.

Charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit sixth degree larceny are Reginald Sharp, 32, of Bridgeport; Alexis Haythe, 24, of Bridgeport; and Rashad Spain, 20, of Stratford.
