A wildfire in a Connecticut state park has been contained after burning for a day.

A fire in the Potash Brook area of the Natchaug State Forest in Windham was extinguished in the evening on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Wildfire consumed 94 acres of parkland, said the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The preserve contains more than 13, 400 acres.

“The town is safe,” said DEEP District Fire control Officer Rich Schenk on Thursday.

While the fire is under control, firefighters and DEEP personnel will continue to monitor and contain any flare-ups that may happen over the next several days.

Wildlife in Natchaug State Forest off Route 203 and the Air Line Trail has been burning since Wednesday, Sept. 16, afternoon.

The wildfire was particularly smokey, firefighters said, due to the blaze being in a swampy part of the park. On Thursday, firefighters brought in heavy machinery to "back burn" in an attempt to put the fire out,

The fire was knocked down by North Windham, Windham Central, and South Windham Fire departments as well as the DEEP.

The cause of the fire has not been released and may not be known at this time.
