Three Charged In Greenwich Bank Fraud Attempt

Greenwich police nabbed three Brooklyn residents after they attempted to fraudulently withdraw cash from an area bank using "re-coded" debit and credit cards.

Police were notified of the trio after a Greenwich Avenue bank called on Thursday, Jan. 31, to report that a woman had attempted to make a withdrawal, but the teller was able to confirm that money from the bank account had been deposited with a fraudulent check and the woman left, the Greenwich Police said.

After speaking with bank officials, officers noticed a vehicle matching the description from the first bank parked at a different bank. Officers entered the bank and spoke with staff while watching the woman, police said.

Officers conducted an on-scene investigation which revealed that the woman, Maygen Rita Payne, 18, had been to various other banks in Greenwich and New York were she was successful in withdrawing $7,930 in stolen money from the account, the Greenwich police said.

The investigation also linked her to two other males and the vehicle. a white Honda Accord, in which he had been seen riding in.

Police were able to track down the vehicle and make a traffic stop in which they recovered the cash, as well as several ATM and debit cards that had been re-coded with stolen credit card information, and 30.5 grams of marijuana.

Payne was charged with larceny, criminal attempt at larceny and conspiracy. Bail was set at $1,500.

The driver, Derrick Burch, 25, was alleged to have the re-coded debit cards, was charged with larceny, criminal attempt at larceny and conspiracy. For the debit cards, he was charged with forgery, identity theft and tampering with a payment card. His bail was set at $50,000.

Kashaun Hutson, 21, was charged with larceny, criminal attempt at larceny and conspiracy, as well as a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession. His bail was set at $25,000.
