FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Pothole damage cost U.S. drivers about $3 billion annually, according to a new study from AAA.

“In the last five years, 16 million drivers across the country have suffered pothole damage to their vehicles, with problems ranging from tire punctures and bent wheels to more expensive suspension damage,” said John Paul, AAA Northeast’s Car Doctor.

U.S. drivers reported they paid an average of $300 for pothole-related vehicle damage. The study also reveals they experienced pothole issues more frequently in the past five years.

AAA advises Connecticut motorists to scan the road and look well ahead to allow for more reaction time. If a pothole cannot be avoided, speed should be reduced, otherwise, check surrounding traffic before swerving, AAA says.

Drivers should check their rear view mirror before any abrupt breaking and release their foot off the brake before rolling into a pothole, AAA says.

Pothole impact can dislodge wheel weights, damage a tire or wheel, bend or break suspension components and knock wheels out of alignment, AAA says.
