FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Bridgeport-based LifeBridge Community Services and Fairfield Counseling Services (FCS) on Tuesday announced their merger, a plan to provide enhanced human and behavioral health services to about 4,000 area residents each year.

“We worked very hard to make this happen,” said Bill Haas, president and CEO of LifeBridge. “It was a very forward-thinking and forewarn-moving event that took place.”

The merger was effective April 1, and FCS will become a program of LifeBridge Community Services. It will continue to operate under its name at its current location, 125 Penfield Road, Fairfield.

The organizations made the announcement at a Tuesday meeting in Fairfield’s Independence Hall.

By joining together the two organizations will be able to serve more people and expand their comprehensive range of behavioral health services for adults, adolescents and families across Fairfield and New Haven counties, Haas said.

With 167 years of history in the area, LifeBridge offers services for those dealing with family challenges, domestic violence, trauma, loss and other issues that affect mental health. Services provided include crisis intervention, intake and assessment, group therapy, medication management and one of only three walk-in behavioral clinics in the state.

FCS is licensed by the state Department of Public Health as a psychiatric and substance abuse outpatient mental health clinic. The town of Fairfield supports FCS in its annual budget, and the FCS site is in a town-owned building.

FCS Board President Joan Sloan said her organization was “at a crossroads” two years ago, looking to partner with another entity to continue quality services.

“Fairfield Counseling Services is looking forward to this new chapter,” she said. “We’re happy with it.”

Both agencies provide vital services to the people of Fairfield and beyond, said Tom Dubrosky, the town’s chief of staff.

‘You are the providers,” he said. “You are key to those who don’t know where to turn. The town appreciates all the good work Fairfield Counseling and LifeBridge does.”
