“Nonfarm jobs grew briskly in February, but it is important to note that some of that growth was a rebound from vacation-affected declines in education that occurred January,” said Andy Condon, director of the Office of Research. “In hindsight, January was likely a bit better than we were able to report and actual growth in February may be a little more moderate.”
The 5.5 percent rate is unchanged from the revised rate for January, and it is down five-tenths of a percentage point from the February 2015 unemployment rate of 6.0%. Over the year, the number of the state’s unemployed residents has fallen by 9,768.
The total number of jobs in state in February came to a level of 1,685,400, seasonally adjusted. In addition, January’s initial 900-job gain was revised slightly higher to 1,200.
The state has now increased employment by 15,800 positions since February 2015, which was affected by extreme cold weather. Nine of ten major industry supersectors increased employment over the year with just the government supersector posting an employment decline.
Connecticut has now recovered 91,200 positions, or 76.6 percent of the 119,100 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs that were lost in the state during the March 2008 to February 2010 employment downturn.
The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Labor Market Area added 1,600 positions for a total of 411,100 jobs.
