Cause Of Death Determined For UConn Student, 19, Pulled From Icy Lake On Campus

A cause of death has been determined for a University of Connecticut student who was found in an icy lake.

Tianyin Shang, 19, from Shanghai, China, was found dead after being pulled from Mirror Lake on the Storrs campus on Monday, Jan. 20.

The Chief Medical Examiner's Office said on Wednesday, Jan. 22, that Shang's death had been ruled a suicide by drowning.

Shang was a fourth-semester math student and member of the Western Equestrian team. 

Counselors are on hand for students, school officials said.

In an email to students, college President Thomas Katsouleas said he planned to gather leaders and professionals to discuss what more could be done to support the health and well-being of students.
