The Mission, in conjunction with the Norwalk Housing Authority and Norwalk Grassroots Tennis, will distribute meals to more than 225 children taking part in summer programs. The meals will be served for eight weeks at five authority learning centers located in low-income housing sites throughout Norwalk, and Norwalk Grassroots Tennis will provide meals to children attending its summer enrichment program, which teaches tennis to disadvantaged children with the help of volunteer coaches.
“The students who receive wholesome breakfasts and lunch at The Norwalk Housing Authority Learning Centers truly look forward to these meals,” said Tiana Brown, assistant director of Learning Centers. “Their struggling parents are especially appreciative too, because they know their children are getting the nourishment they need throughout the summer months.”
Ellen Simmonds, director of administration of Norwalk Grassroots Tennis & Education, concurs.
“The food provided by Bridgeport Rescue Mission to children participating in our Summer Academic Enrichment Program ensures that our children have stamina and energy to not only play tennis and but also focus on the camp’s fun learning activities in science, math and reading," she said. "Remember that these children are provided breakfast and lunch from the schools during the academic year. The food from Bridgeport Rescue Mission is vital because it alleviates hunger in the summertime.”
Bridgeport Rescue Mission Executive Director Terry Wilcox said his organization is extremely grateful to the following for their support preparing nearly 900 sandwiches: Ridgefield Baptist; Hope Church, Wilton; Grace Baptist, Norwalk; Grace Community Church, New Canaan; St. Matthew’s Episcopal, Wilton; Southport Congregational; Wilton Congregational; and St. Mark’s Episcopal, Bridgeport.
